Jakub Gołąbek

Jakub Gołąbek

1739-1789

Jakub Gołąbek, born in 1739 in Silesia, died March 30, 1789 in Krakow, Polish composer and singer. A lack of information about Gołąbek’s place of birth has meant that he is usually given Czech or Silesian origins; now W. Sierakowski’s view that his origins are Silesian is accepted. The first confirmation of his presence in Krakow is the registration of his marriage to Marcjanna Celinska on 4 November 1766 (preserved in the parish archives of Wawel Cathedral in Krakow). As a musician he was first active in the St Mary's Church ensemble and from around 1774 until his death, in the cathedral band in Wawel, where he sang and for whom he composed music. Between 1781-1787 he was a singing teacher in W. Sierakowski’s music school; he took part in concerts organized by Sierakowski, including in 1773, for the court of Bishop K. Sołtyk, where Gołąbek’s Kantata ku czci św. Stanisława (Cantata in honour of Saint Stanislaus) was performed.
