Michał Świerzyński

1868-1957

Świerzyński Michał, * 25 X 1868 Kraków, † June 30, 1957 Warsaw, Polish composer, conductor and pedagogue. From 1888 he studied at the Krakow Music Society W. Żeleński Conservatory (theory and composition), then in Warsaw with Z. Noskowski and in Prague with O. Nedbal. From 1890 he directed several choirs in Kraków. In the years 1906 to 1908 he conducted the opera orchestra in Lviv. From 1908 to 1930 he taught piano and theory subjects at the Conservatory in Kraków and in the years 1930-1936 in the Wielkopolska School of Music in Poznań. In 1936 he retired; he moved to Warsaw, where he worked as a choral conductor. From 1945, he served as Director of the III Department of the F. Chopin PWSM in Warsaw. In 1952, he received a diploma of recognition from the PCU for 70-years of compositional, social and educational work; he was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit (in 1952). Michał Świerzyński’s varied work is best described as a romantic style with a strongly national colour.
