Tadeusz Dobrzański

1916-1996

Tadeusz Dobrzański, born 6 September 1916, in Sambor, died on 18 June 1996, in Kraków, Polish conductor and composer. In the years 1924-1933 he studied in the Zielonczanki-Donichtowa music school in Sambor (piano, theory), in 1938 he completed law studies at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. Between 1933-1948 he worked as a conductor of instrumental and choral groups. In the years 1951-1954 he studied composition privately with A. Malawski. From 1948 he worked with the Choir and Orchestra of Polish Radio in Kraków in the position of conductor and leader of the choir, and from 1962 as conductor of the orchestra. He made a series of archival recordings with the ensemble of the Polish Radio Choir and prepared the majority of the oratorio-cantata compositions performed with the participation of leading Polish orchestras. As director and conductor of the PR choir he took part in appearances in the GDR (1951), Switzerland (1967), France (1971), Italy (1972). Dobrzański received state honours for his artistic activity, including; the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1964) and the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1973). In the years 1970-1971 he led the chorus of the Academy of Music in Kraków. From 1962-1982 he was head of Polish Radio and Television Choir in Krakow, with whom he worked until 1989.
