Marian Borkowski

Marian Borkowski, born 17 August, 1934 in Pabianice, Polish composer, musicologist and pianist. He studied composition with K. Sikorski and piano with J. Ekier and N. Hornowska at the PWSM in Warsaw, earning a diploma in 1965. In 1966 he graduated in musicology at Warsaw University. In 1966-1968 he continued his studies in Paris: composition with Nadia Boulanger and O. Messiaen at the Conservatoire, musicology with J. Chailley and B.S. Brook at the University, and in addition he also studied philosophy at the University and College de France. In 1972 and 1974 he participated in the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, in 1973 and 1975 at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, where he worked under the direction of G. Ligeti, I. Xenakis, K. Stockhausen and F. Donatoni. Since 1968 he has lectured at the PWSM (now the Academy of Music) in Warsaw, since 1976 as a docent. He led the composition class.
In the years 1975-1978 he was Associate Dean, from 1996, Dean of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory, in the years 1978-1981, and 1987-1990, Vice-Rector of the University. In 1989 he received the title of Professor. Since 1993 he is also the chair of music theory. Since 2010 he teaches composition at the F. Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. From 1971-1977 he served as president of the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Composers' Union. Marian Borkowski is the founder and artistic director of the Laboratory of Contemporary Music fFestival in Białystok, and from 1995 president of the Laboratory of Contemporary Music Association. He is a guest lecturer at the Conservatory in Paris, Siena, Seoul and at University in the United States and Canada.
He is a winner of, among others, the Youth Competition of the Polish Composers’ Union (Warsaw 1966), G.B. Viotti Composition Competition (Vercelli 1969), the Karol Szymanowski Composition Competition (Warsaw 1974), the International New Music Competition (New York 1990). He received the the Ministry of Culture and Arts Award three times (1976, 1980, 1982). In 2008 received the Honorary Award of the Polish Composers' Union and the Silver Medal "Service to Polish Culture - Gloria Artis". In 2009 was awarded St. Brother Albert’s Prize, in 2010, a Medal "For service to the Fryderyk Chopin Music University" and the Award of the Association of Authors ZAiKS.
