Piotr Radko, composer, born 29 April, 1957, Kijany. He studied composition with Edward Bogusławski at the Academy of Music in Katowice, where he graduated in 1981. Private meetings with Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Witold Lutosławski also had a significant impact on the further musical development of the composer.
In 1985 he made his debut at the "Warsaw Autumn" Festival with the piece ‘Tren’ (Threnody) for symphony orchestra (1984). His works have been performed in many European countries, as well as in Japan and the United States. Several compositions have been recorded for Polish Radio and released on compact discs.
Piotr Radko has won many competitions for composers: in 1981, he received the prize at the PCU Youth competition for Poemat kontemplacji for 8 string instruments (1981), in 1988 - third prize at the Karol Szymanowski Composition Competition for Sonnets for flute, harpsichord and strings (1986), in 1991 - second prize in the Tadeusz Baird Competition for Young Composers for Epitafium-Metamorfozy for chamber orchestra (1991), in 1993 - third prize at the Grazyna Bacewicz Composition Competition for Cantabile, Allegro con fuoco for violin, cello and piano (1993), in 1995 - second prize at the Composition Competition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Polish Composers' Union for Sinfonietta for orchestra (1994), in 1997 - second prize at the Karol Szymanowski Composition Competition in Warsaw for the Study for piano (1985). Additionally, he has also received the Artistic Award of the Katowice Voivodeship (1989).
