Sławomir Kupczak studied composition under the tutelage of Jan Wichrowski and computer composition under Stanisław Krupowicz and Cezary Duchnowski at the Music Academy in Wrocław. He has participated in international courses for young composers held in Radziejowice, Gdańsk, and Canterbury, led by artists such as Hanna Kulenty, Marta Ptaszyńska, Elżbieta Sikora, Witold Szalonek, Zygmunt Krauze, Louis Andriessen, Anders Brødsgaard, Nicholas Cleobury, Dominic Muldowney, Philip Wilby, and Roderick Watkins. He has held scholarships granted by the Minster of Culture, the Warsaw Autumn Friends' Foundation, Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, the ZAIKS Authors' Association, and the Council of the City of Wrocław.
In 2006, his piece entitled Anaphora VI finished 4th at the 53rd UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris in the young composers' category. In the same year, he also took 2nd place at the 53rd Tadeusz Baird Competition for Young Composers in Warsaw for Anaphora VII - Lament.
Sławomir Kupczak's compositions have been presented on the radio and performed at many concerts and contemporary music festivals in Poland and abroad, e.g. Musica Polonica Nova and Musica Electronica Nova in Wrocław, Warsaw Autumn, Audio Art in Warsaw and Krakow, Turning Sounds 2 in Warsaw (monographic concert), Synthese in Bourges, France, Sonorities in Northern Ireland, UNESCO International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music in Rome, 53rd UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris, Velvet Curtain 2 in Lviv, Prix Italia, Polish Music Festival in Krakow (2006, 2008), Sounds New in Canterbury (2008), 21st Warsaw Music Meetings, 34th Music in Old Krakow Festival, Brand New Music in Katowice, Ohren auf Europa in Düsseldorf, and Polska!Year in Great Britain. His pieces are performed by outstanding soloists and ensembles: Agata Zubel, Anna Radziejewska, Andrzej Bauer, Karol Marianowski, Maciej Grzybowski, Gośka Isphording, the Silesian String Quartet, the Cikada String Quartet, the AUKSO Orchestra, the New Music Orchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Wrocław Philharmonic, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Łódź Philharmonic, Camerata Silesia, and Capella Cracoviensis. He is primarily interested in large forms and the use of electronics: Novella for the computer (2007-2009), Frederic Chopin. Personal Journal, a sound installation based on the composer's letters (live electronics, 2010), Report for the computer and a chamber ensemble to the words of P. Krzaczkowski (2011/2012).
An important place in his oeuvre is taken by orchestra pieces: Penultima for cello and orchestra (2008), a symphony Capax Dei for choir and orchestra (2008-2010), Dossier A. Z. for three saxophones and orchestra (2009), Figment for orchestra (2011), Phantasms for clarinet and orchestra (2011-2012), Hummingbirds for orchestra (2012). His pieces are ordered by festivals, music institutions and performance competitions. In 2008, together with Cezary Duchnowski and Paweł Hendrich, Kupczak founded an improvisation music ensemble Phonos ek Mechanes; the band performed at the Ad Libitum festival in Warsaw, the Audio Art festival in Krakow, Biennale WRO 09 in Wrocław, Contem.ucha in Łódź, A38 Club in Budapest, and Koda in Lublin.
