Jacek Szczurowski

1716 - 1773

Jacek (Hyacinthus) Szczurowski, born 15 VIII 1716(?), Ruś Czerwona, dead after 1773, Polish composer, S.J. Sources giving Szczurowski’s date of birth as 19 VIII 1718, and 19 VIII 1721, are probably incorrect. On 14 November 1735, Szczurowski entered the Jesuit Order in Kraków as a novitiate. Probably having already had musical training he continued his studies from 1735 to 1737 at the St. Peter and Paul music school. He took his simple vow on 20 November, 1737 in Kalisz, his solemn vows on 15 August 1746, in Gdańsk and became a monk without Ordination (coadiutor temporalis). He was deputy (socius) prefect for music - which usually meant directing the band or choir, supervision and teaching music – in the music schools in Kalisz (1737-1739, 1761-1765), Gdańsk (1742-1746, 1749-1751, 1759/60), Kraków (1747-1748, 1752-1754), at the St. Mary’s College in Jarosław (1754-1756), Grudziądz (1760/61), Poznań (1768-71) and Wałcz (1771-1773). He probably also had musical activity working as a sacristan in the Jesuit colleges in Kalisz (1739-41), Krosno (1741/42) and Toruń (1746/47, 1748/49). Szczurowski’s fate after the dissolution of the Jesuit Order in 1773 is not known.
