Marco Scacchi

1602-1685

Scacchi, Sacchius, Scachius, Sacki, Skakius, Socacki and other, Marco * beginning of the seventeenth century, Rome (?), † 11 September 1662 Gallese (Viterbo), Italian composer, violinist, music theorist. Scacchi, like his brother Pellegrino, a Roman organist, was a student of G.F. Anerio. From about 1624 he was a violinist in King Zygmunt III’s band. 24 XII 1626 the monarch appointed the movable goods of deceased musician Marco Gentili to him. He led Prince Władysław Wasa’s band, probably from 1628, and in 1630, after the death of Anerio, unofficially took over the leadership of the royal orchestra. In 1633 he was appointed by King Władysław IV as Kapellmeister. On 26 November 1635 in Warsaw, Scacchi married a German woman Regina Kellerin (primo voto Graben). He accompanied the king on journeys together with the band: to Vilnius in 1636 and 1639, in Kraków in 1637, to Częstochowa in 1641, in Gdańsk in 1646. In March 1649 he obtained permission from King Jan Kazimierz to travel to his homeland in order to treat gout, but it is not known when he actually left the Commonwealth. Prior to November 1651 he settled in Gallese, where his student was A. Berardi. Scacchi maintained contacts with Italian musicians (among them R. Micheli), and above all else with the Germans (Ch. Werner, A. Profe, J. Stobaeus, H. Schütz). Particularly close ties bound him with the Gdańsk conductor and bookseller, K. Förster senior. The conflict between Förster and the Gdańsk organist P. Siefert, which Scacchi joined, became an indirect cause of his theoretical writings with a polemic character.
