Joachim Olkuśnik

1927-2008

Olkuśnik Joachim, born 27 III 1927, Kostrzyna (near Częstochowa), died 18 XII 2008, Warsaw, Polish composer. In 1960 he completed his composition studies at PWSM in Warsaw under T. Szeligowski. 1960 to 1964 he was music columnist in musical and literary magazines, and for Polish Radio. During this time he also co-founded the artistic group Camerata, which gathered together young poets (A. Brycht, J. Fotek, S. Grochowiak, I. Iredyński, R. Śliwonik) and composers (B. Konowalski, Olkuśnik, Z. Penherski, R. Twardowski). This group, in cooperation with the bi-weekly literary magazine „Współczesność” organized literary-musical evenings and attempted a synthesis of the arts in a specific form of rhapsodic theatre.

From 1964-1970 Olkuśnik was editor in editorial commission of Polish Radio (including a series Z dawnych i najnowszych kart muzyki polskiej). 1974-1985 chief editor of the Authors' Agency Music Publishers, which played a special role in the publishing and dissemination of contemporary Polish composers, especially solo and chamber music. In the years 1967-1969 and 1975-1977 was a member of the Board of PCU. In 1964 he received an award in the G. Fitelberg competition for Spektrofonografie, 1980 an award at the Composition Competition Muzyka for flute, clarinet, cello and piano.
