(...) The score of Elenai, although far from the expansive form and symphonies, must have been very close to the composer's heart. Beginning with the pre-war years, he returned to it many times: during the difficult years of the Great War; immediately after the war, during the struggle to secure his native Warmia for Poland; in 1936, when he wrote a new, expanded version of the work; finally, a few days before his death, as hi devised ambitious plans to transcribe Ellenai for full symphony orchestra. In pondering the twists and turns in the history of this work, still being discovered through scrupulous source research, in the present edition we attempt to present in a version as close as possible to the composer's intentions.
