Relief III (1985) consists of nine sections divided by double bar lines, which are preceded by a caesura, fermata or pause. These sections are not repeated, but a certain motivic constancy is preserved, making use of the sound material in tritones and seconds. The Lento appassionato fluctuates slightly, but never exceeds a slow tempo. The dynamics, generally soft, are distinctly altered just twice. The thick texture and difficult, albeit precisely notated, rhythm point to inspirations from Messiaen’s system. Also noteworthy is the combination of the rhythmic profile and the graphic notation of the overlapping sounds, as well as the final chord, seemingly of a different provenance, built from the notes c-d-e flat. This work won first prize in a composition competition in Kamień Pomorski in the year it was written, and the following year it was performed by the outstanding organist Julian Gembalski, a good friend of the composer, at the Legnica Chamber and Organ Music Festival.
