String Sextet in E flat major op.39
String Sextet in E flat major, op. 39 consists of four movements: I. Allegro moderato ed espressivo; II. Menuetto (Allegro), III. Elegia (Andante espressivo e sostenuto), IV. Finale (Allegro vivace). On the overall formal level, it is a rather typical sonata cycle, with the first and last movements employing the sonata form, a minuet in the second section and a slow third movement (the order of these two is reversed in relation to usual practice). That latter movement introduces the only tonal contrast, in the form of a minor key.
In melodic terms, the Sextet is characterised by melodious themes and a preference for the cantilena even in brief motifs, coupled with a certain economy of musical ideas and a tendency to repeat them, which contributes to formal consistency. The simplicity of the melodies is directly correlated with relatively simple harmonies.
