Two Winds
for unaccompanied mixed choir
Two winds for mixed choir to words by Julian Tuwim were written by Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa in the early spring of 1968 for her entrance exam to the composition class at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków. The composer sought to combine her excellent feel for the prosody and melody of the Polish language with a modern musical idiom. She found inspiration in the output of French composers (Les Six) and also Stanisław Wiechowicz, whose works she performed several times with a female choir. The resultant settings are marked by an impressionistic approach to harmony, a myriad of colours from the choral ensemble and expression that sits well with the texts by eminent Polish poets.
