This work was written in Paris in 1981 for a monographic concert at the Cite internationale des arts on 24 May 1982, during which it was first performed by Czech flautist Pavel Foltyn, who was on a scholarship in France. Shortly afterwards, during the recording of instrumental music for the radio opera Derriere son double, Lawrence Beauregard, the legendary flautist with the Ensemble InterContemporain, was persuaded to record Voyage III at the same time. After looking through the music for a few minutes, he simply stood in front of the microphone and played it almost a vista, as if he had known the work for a long time.
The leading motif of this miniature piece consists of repeats of the note e, out of which the whole piece develops. The score leaves performers plenty of freedom, encouraging them to offer a creative interpretation of the work.
