Interlude

The work was composed in 1989 and dedicated to Paul Sacher with a commission from the Sacher Foundation (Paul Sacher Stiftung). He was a conductor and a great patron of the arts, who used his considerable financial resources to commission works from the most outstanding composers, such as Stravinsky, Bartok, Britten, Martinů, Honegger, Hindemith and many others. Interludium was conceived as the central part of a quasi-triptych, which was to be opened with ''Partita'' and closed with Łańcuch II. The composer accepted the possibility of performing these pieces together with a soloist who would remain on the stage throughout. In this way three separate compositions existed, as well as a series with its own dramaturgy, which keeps the listener in suspense for nearly three quarters of an hour, captivating a riot of colours and fine harmony.
