Arias from the Operetta ";Lottery for Husbands" in Austria

2012-08-16
Soprano Lavinia Dames performed two arias from Karol Szymanowski’s operetta "Lottery for Husbands" on 20 July in Ossiach as part of the Carinthischer Sommer festival accompanied by the Junge Philharmonie Wien. Interestingly, they were heard in German as „Als Mägdelein in jungen Jahren…” (When I was very young ...) and „Das Herz schwingt frei im Höhenflug…“ (order the heart ...) in a translation by Dorota Krzywicka-Kaindel. Karol

Szymanowski had the idea to write an operetta in 1908 whilst staying together with Grzegorz Fitelberg in Vienna. Vienna was then fascinated by this light and pleasant musical genre, which is why in "Lottery" the young composer saw a relatively quick and easy opportunity to improve his enfeebled financial position. Demand for operetta in Vienna seemed to be limitless, and not just there - operetta reigned also in Berlin, Warsaw and Lviv. And it was in Lviv that Szymanowski found the author of the libretto, Julian Maszyński (son of composer Piotr Maszyński), who appeared under the pseudonym Krzewiński. Both men understood each other perfectly; within a few days Krzewiński had prepared two projects. In the Summer of 1908, Szymanowski composed the operetta whose initial title was “Grand Prize”, and only later – “Lottery for Husbands”. But when he went to Warsaw in Autumn, hoping his unequalled friend Fitelberg would help him to work on the score, he met sad disappointment. The Warsaw Philharmonic had entrusted Fitelberg to give concerts in the season 1908/1909. Szymanowski, left to work by himself on the operetta, did not give up. On 28 October 1909 he wrote the last page of the 396 page score. The final title was "Lottery for Husbands (Fiancé No. 69)."

THE TALE OF THE HEART. FAVOLA IN MUSICA: a joint project by Aleksander Nowak and Radek Rak from ANAKLASIS on sale as of 6th October

It is a musical-literary tale about a quest for identity, truth, and for what makes us human. The new stage work by Aleksander Nowak – which is, at the same time, Radek Rak’s operatic debut – explores the sources of good and evil, fusing reality with mythology and steering towards ‘the left-hand side of the world’. The authors spin a tale about the dual human nature. THE TALE OF THE HEART. FAVOLA IN MUSICA – the album that presents their joint project – will go on sale on 6th October.

Różycki’s Adventures in Jazzland. The album INSPIRED BY LUDOMIR RÓŻYCKI from ANAKLASIS on sale as of 28th August

Spectacularly successful as Ludomir Różycki’s music was in his lifetime, it is seldom programmed nowadays. All the same, such remarkable art could hardly fall into utter oblivion. It has attracted and fascinated excellent jazz pianist Kuba Stankiewicz, who has translated it into the language of jazz. The effects have been recorded and released on ANAKLASIS label’s most recent album, INSPIRED BY LUDOMIR RÓŻYCKI, which goes on sale as of 28th August.

THE QUEEN THAT LOVED A GERMAN. OUR ALBUM WANDA PREMIERES ON 31ST MARCH!

This is by no means a piece about the centuries-long Polish-German conflict. It is, instead, a tale of impossible love, of tragic conflict between personal happiness and the common good.
