IL TEMPO PASSA. The first monographic album by Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa

2024-05-06

Time passes constantly, changing the world and its soundscape around us. The title IL TEMPO PASSA may be both a reflection on the impermanence of life, world and things and a piece of advice to enjoy the moment. The latest album by ANAKLASIS presents Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa’s cameral and symphonic works from recent years. Premiere on 28 May 2024, on the composer’s 75th birthday.

After retiring in 2018 and after many years of hard work for Polish musical culture, Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa undertook composing. Her work is far from despair or rebellion against fate or the passing of time. For her, music becomes a pretext to express consent to the inevitable and to fondly remember what has happened in life so far. The album’s title perfectly reflects the moods present in the songs and the attitude of its author – full of respect for tradition, with a note of nostalgia, looking at her own life and musical experiences.

Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa’s professional life has been a long series of challenges and successes, and she is well-known for her achievements in the fields of education, management, and politics. She was, among others, the head of Cracow Philharmonic, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Katowice, and (in 1997–1999) – Minister of Culture. The more surprising it seems, then, that she has still found time and energy for creative work – for she is, first and foremost, an outstanding composer and conductor.

The album IL TEMPO PASSA comprises a selection of works for chamber and symphony orchestras, primarily her most recent compositions. These include Skylark Concerto for amplified harpsichord and chamber orchestra, dedicated to the memory of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (first performed in September 2023), the only slightly earlier Il tempo passa. Passacaglia for great symphony orchestra (a birthday present for Elżbieta Penderecka and at the same time a tribute to her husband), as well as the diptych Don’t Look Back! Orpheus and Euridice and Lot and Lot’s Wife for two solo flutes and chamber orchestra. Only one piece in the album’s programme, Goodbye to the Mediterranean. An Attempt at a Reconstruction for two guitars and orchestra, dates back to the year 1986.

Well-known soloists and ensembles were engaged to record the album: The Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Yaroslav Shemet, The Silesian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Piotr Pławner and soloists: harpsichordist Aleksandra Gajecka-Antosiewicz, harpist Agnieszka Kaczmarek-Bialic, flautists Łukasz Długosz and Agata Kielar-Długosz, child soprano – Bartłomiej Duda, and guitarists: Marek Nosal and Jakub Moroziński.

An album presenting the work of one of the most important composers of Polish music of the 20th and 21st centuries will be released by the ANAKLASIS label in the PORTRAITS series on 28 May, on the composer’s 75th birthday. The album’s premiere will take place during a birthday gala with the composer’s participation, at the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice. PWM Edition is the co-organiser of the event and the publisher of Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa’s compositions. An album will be available online soon.

THE TALE OF THE HEART. FAVOLA IN MUSICA: a joint project by Aleksander Nowak and Radek Rak from ANAKLASIS on sale as of 6th October

It is a musical-literary tale about a quest for identity, truth, and for what makes us human. The new stage work by Aleksander Nowak – which is, at the same time, Radek Rak’s operatic debut – explores the sources of good and evil, fusing reality with mythology and steering towards ‘the left-hand side of the world’. The authors spin a tale about the dual human nature. THE TALE OF THE HEART. FAVOLA IN MUSICA – the album that presents their joint project – will go on sale on 6th October.

Różycki’s Adventures in Jazzland. The album INSPIRED BY LUDOMIR RÓŻYCKI from ANAKLASIS on sale as of 28th August

Spectacularly successful as Ludomir Różycki’s music was in his lifetime, it is seldom programmed nowadays. All the same, such remarkable art could hardly fall into utter oblivion. It has attracted and fascinated excellent jazz pianist Kuba Stankiewicz, who has translated it into the language of jazz. The effects have been recorded and released on ANAKLASIS label’s most recent album, INSPIRED BY LUDOMIR RÓŻYCKI, which goes on sale as of 28th August.

THE QUEEN THAT LOVED A GERMAN. OUR ALBUM WANDA PREMIERES ON 31ST MARCH!

This is by no means a piece about the centuries-long Polish-German conflict. It is, instead, a tale of impossible love, of tragic conflict between personal happiness and the common good.

VIRTUOSITY WITH A FLOURISH. ELŻBIETA SIKORA’S CONCERTOS ALBUM PREMIERES ON 2ND DECEMBER!

When asked to attempt a definition of her music, she called it lyrical expressionism. The choice of this term says much about the emotional intensity of Elżbieta Sikora’s music, which may reflect the experience of her two home countries, Poland and France, but is also a consequence of her artistic maturation in an age when two powerful trends – the avant-garde and neo-Classicism – were vying for the palm. Such a label may also result from the artist’s focus on the listener as her target, whom she invariably attempts to surprise, shock, or bewilder.
