Four Christmas Carols
for unaccompanied mixed choir
For centuries, the Nativity of the Lord has been associated with chants, originally called rotuły, then Christmas carols and pastorałki [pastoral-themed carols]. (…) In the sphere of Polish culture, the Christmas music repertoire is extremely rich and varied in terms of instruments and voices used, structure, texture, or expression. It comprises interpretations of well-known texts that have been present in culture for several hundred years, melodies of domestic and foreign carols and pastorałki as well as fully original pieces. Both Paweł Łukaszewski’s arrangements and original compositions fit into this trend. The works published in this collection represent the so-called defined music, i.e. the one in which primary music (the song’s melody) is completed as a result of the composer’s own harmonization.
