Witold Szalonek's Preludes for piano is a collection of eight works that are very different in terms of texture and expression. Originally, the series included 12 works (grouped in threes), dedicated to the composer's closest friends. The word ''dedication'' is of special significance here. Each of the Preludes (by 2001 he had created a total of eight) was written with a specific person in mind, and became a musical portrait of them, and also represented the essence of the composer's emotional relationship to the recipient of the dedication. They are therefore very personal works, provoking their heroes and outside observers to attempt to guess what the writer 'had in mind' choosing such and not other notes... [M. Dziadek]
