Sonata BWV 1001
for Guitar
The solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas are, of Bach output, works which only found understanding with virtuosos and audiences in comparatively recent times. While chordal playing on the violin is limited by the technical possibilities of the instrument, the introduction of full polyphony also presents many difficulties to the performer. Fugue from the First Sonata in G minor was also arranged for organ and for lute by the composer, and one can see how the various types of sound production required a different kind of compositional invention. In the present arrangement for guitar, the editor (Alina Gruszka) has introduces small changes resulting from other techniacal and tonal possibilities of the instrument. The Sonata has also been transcribed to the key of A minor.
