The publication of Bachs shorter pieces in three books (this is the first and is followed by ''Short Pieces'' and ''Little Preludes'') aims at providing material, which will gradually lead the pupil to ''Two-part Inventions'', ''French Suites'' etc. In the present collection the first ten and the last two pieces come from the ''Little Clavier Book for Anna Magdalena Bach'', the eleventh being an excerpt from the ''Suite in E minor'' for lute and the twelfth one from ''Wilhelm Friedemanns Little Collection''.
