Szymanowska’s etudes should not be assigned solely to the type of the etude‑exercise, but also to the second group distinguished by Nathalie Froud. Representing études de perfectionnement, they are also sometimes linked to the category of the étude de salon, and also, in a sense, the étude de concert. Szymanowska may have preluded in concerts and performed her etudes in the salon; she may also have used them in her teaching work.
