''Versus I'' for organ is a verse from Revelation (xxi, 1): ''And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.'' I wrote the piece in the spring of 1982 on a commission from the Internationale Orgelwoche in Nürnmberg, where it was performed by Józef Serafin. ''Versus I'' is dedicated to Julian Gembalski.
