This is by no means a piece about the centuries-long Polish-German conflict. It is, instead, a tale of impossible love, of tragic conflict between personal happiness and the common good. Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa’s opera Wanda is based on a play by Cyprian Kamil Norwid. As a student at secondary music school, Joanna joined a ‘Live Word Club’ run by eminent actress Jadwiga Halina Gallowa (a legendary teacher from Cracow’s Academy of Theatre Arts, now the AST) and played the title role in a production of the play prepared during the Club’s meetings. Today the composer thus symbolically repays Gallowa for the inspiration from her youth. The world premiere, directed by Waldemar Zawodziński, took place at Wawel Royal Castle as part of Norwid’s (Poland’s ‘fourth national bard’s’) birth bicentenary celebrations. The spectacle’s music director was Michał Klauza, who conducted the Cracow Opera Orchestra, Choir, Children’s Choir, and Ballet. The solo parts were sung by Agata Schmidt (Wanda), Tomasz Konieczny (Castellan), Andrzej Lampert (Rüdiger / Skald), and Paula Maciołek (Maid).
