Krzysztof Penderecki in memoriam
This composition is dedicated to the memory of Krzysztof Penderecki; the first Quintet (2018) for strings was also dedicated to him.
The structure of both works is based on symphonies by Beethoven – the Seventh and Fourth respectively, which Penderecki esteemed and often conducted. There are no quotations from Beethoven in the quintets, but the Quintetto no. 2 quotes snatches of Penderecki’s Third String Quartet (‘Leaves from an unwritten diary’).
