Genesis III: Monodramma
Op. 19 No. 3 per soprano, 13 metalli di percussione e 6 violbassi
Monodram per soprano, metalli di percussione e sei violbassi is the last section of the Genesis cycle. Its peculiarity consists in the use of two parts with definite pitches, i.e. the vocal part (soprano) and the tubular bells. The remaining instruments, including double basses out of tune, form a tonal layer of indefinite pitch. The textual layer of this composition is also quite exceptional, as it is a kind of textual ''play''. It consists of a non-sensical complex word: LI-TO-ME-TA-LE-FO-NI-TY-GRANNITY, invented by the composer. Wishing to show the affinity between the oldest instrument, i.e. the human voice, and the metallophones, Górecki used the twelve-note technique and the sonoristic noises recalling primitive rituals.
