The song to Kazimiera Iłłakowiczównas poem entitled perversely Not for You is a birthday gift offered as a token of friendship to Mieczysław Tomaszewski, as attested by the handwritten dedication. It was composed as a response to a commission by the staff members of the Department of Analysis and Interpretation of the Academy of Music in Cracow, who approached several composer-friends with a request to write a song to lend lustre to the sixtieth jubilee of their mentor. It was not for the first time that Lutosławski used Kazimiera Iłłakowiczównas poetry. In 1934 he composed the songs Water-nymph and Lime-tree Cradle-Song for voice and piano which got lost during the Second World War. In 1957 he wrote the cycle Five Songs, originally for voice and piano and later arranged by the composer for voice and 30 solo instruments. From the first bars of the song Not for You we can trace certain affinities of the harmonies and in general of the character of music, ascribed, as it were, to the poet. The initially jocose tone of the repeated words not for you-for me alters at the climax and attains such power and depth of expression as to change the gravity of this short, unpretentious song a miniature jewel.
