As W. Żeleński wrote, ''The late Stolpes Sonata allows us to see the work of a finished master, extinguished prematurely. With its atmosphere, and the manner in which the piano is used, reminds us of Chopin; it is hurling through fantasy, some unstated yearning, everything captured in a robust and classic form. The Scherzo is the unrivalled pearl of the whole Sonata; we havent heard anything so equally finished and original since a long time.'' Stolpe wrote the Sonata in D minor in Berlin. On the manuscript the inscription ''Berlin, den 27 Dezember 1870'' is visible. This is therefore the work of a 19 year old creator.
