"Blues usually has a twelve- or sixteen-bar formula, but nostalgic works without the classical blues form can still be blues, a prime example being Basin Street Blues. This composition employs a form unusual for the genre, but it is clear from the mood that this piece belongs to the blues family. Basin Street Blues was written in 1927 as a song, but like many other jazz standards it has received several marvellous instrumental arrangements. All jazz musicians play it. The most popular arrangements are those of Louis Armstrong, who recorded his first version in 1927.
Spencer Williams, who wrote Basin Street Blues, was born in New Orleans in 1889. In 1916, he moved to New York, where he hooked up with the Dixieland band Louisiana Five, one of the first jazz bands. As well as writing the songs, he was also the pianist and vocalist. Alongside Royal Garden Blues, Basin Street Blues is one of Williams’s most popular trad jazz works".
