On the Other Side of the Mirror
for multi percussion
The title of this composition triggers associations with Lewis Carroll’s novel, but the literary work bore only an indirect influence over the shape of the musical work, inspiring the idea of a dreamy, unreal reflection of the material world. This idea determined the formal plan of the composition: the violent, heavy music of the first and third movements is contrasted with the second and fourth movements, which sound gentle and light, as if rising into the air, creating the impression of dual realities. During the first performance of this work, those realities were further enhanced by the stage lighting, which was different for movements I and III compared to movements II and IV.
