Empusa
for alto saxophone
Έμπουσα [Empusa] was inspired by the Greek goddess of fear, Empusa. She was a terrifying creature who left the underworld by night and, assuming various forms, lured people to their death and sucked out their blood.
This work is in a single movement, in which three sections can be distinguished: the first section, introducing an air of mystery, is a musical illustration of Empusa in her lair – a section suffused with a gloomy character. The second section represents the horrific moment of a deathly clash during which the goddess carries out her bloody work. The last section refers to the opening of the work: it is another depiction of Empus, this time within the context of a nocturnal incident. This section, which crowns the work, is filled with a calm, but dark mood.
