New issue of "Quarta" (spring 2015)
2015-04-08
A new issue of Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne's periodical,”Quarta”, has just appeared. We have decided to dedicate this issue of ”Quarta” to the film music.
Music serves many functions: it enriches religious rituals, is the subject of artistic experience, accompanies everyday activities and is an important element of play. In this issue of Quarta periodical we focus on film music. Although it belongs to the world of amusement, it is nevertheless created in all seriousness of the composition workshop.
Since the invention of the cinematograph, the role and importance of film music has changed significantly. Treated so far as a poorer sister of artistic and independent work, or as a despised accompaniment, it has finally been recognised for its sophisticated structure, complex interactions with image and, very often, its autonomous nature. It has reached philharmonic halls and great festivals. What has also changed is the status of film music composers. Although the greatest artists have always written music for the cinema, it is only now that their input and talent, very often supported by noble academic background, has been finally noticed.
I would like to invite you for a trip into the world of Polish film music, into listening and playing film themes by Wojciech Kilar, Krzesimir Dębski, Jerzy "Duduś" Matuszkiewicz, Michał Lorenc and Maciej Zieliński. We all know and like this music which is always of the highest value.
