Music by Górecki, Father and Son, at the Anniversary of the Silesian Philharmonic
2015-05-14
Polish music will be the core of the concert scheduled for 23 May to celebrate the 70th season of the Silesian Philharmonic. The programme will comprise sacral music by Mikołaj Górecki, the son and by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, the father. Kyrie by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Glory by Mikołaj Górecki will be presented consecutively, as in a traditional mass, by the Choir and Orchestra of the Silesian Philharmonic under the baton of Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk.
Although composed at different time: Glory by Mikołaj Górecki in 2000 and Kyrie by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki between 2004 and 2005, both works have a number of common features. What is evident is their sacral origin. Henryk Mikołaj Górecki intended to write the entire mass, but eventually managed to finish only the first part. Therefore, Mikołaj Górecki's Glory symbolically complements his father's artistic idea. The impression is potentiated by a similar line-up of a mixed choir and string orchestra as a basis.
Furthermore, both pieces had their premieres last year: Kyrie by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki in April during the Warsaw concert dedicated to John Paul II (the planned mass was supposed to be composed on JPII's request), and Glory by Mikołaj Górecki in October during - what is significant - the Henryk Mikołaj Górecki Festival of Polish Composers in Bielsko-Biała.
The programme of the anniversary concert of the Silesian Philharmonic will be complemented by Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor by Henryk Wieniawski with Piotr Pławner as a soloist.
We would like to congratulate the Silesian Philharmonic on the 70th anniversary and wish them many equally exciting projects.
