Karłowicz's Symphony "Rebirth" in Sweden
2015-07-13
The only symphony by Mieczysław Karłowicz, "Rebirth", will be performed by Gävle Symfoniorkester with Giedrė Šlekytė as conductor on 3 September in Gävle, Sweden.
The "Rebirth" Symphony, composed in 1900-1902 as the closing piece of the adolescence period in Mieczysław Karłowicz's artistic output, is one of the two works (next to symphonic poem "The Returning Waves") with literary content. The piece is full of reflections on the dreams of youth, with typical fin-de-siècle melancholy, fatigue and resignation of the struggling soul, yet, eventually, with a positive finale in which "the soul is standing triumphant and serene, looking into the afterlife, and showing to all men the way leading to rebirth".
