Agata Zubel on ‘Double Battery’

Agata Zubel on ‘Double Battery’
2016-05-20

On 21st May the National Forum of Music will hold the premiere of Double Battery. Agata Zubel tells about the concept of her work:

Double Battery was composed on the commission of Ensemble Intercontemporain - this is where the idea of using individual instruments in a more soloist manner was born. This is the function of primarily two bass clarinets that in a way rival against each other, as well as against two percussion sets. The pair of clarinets is juxtaposed against the pair flute-oboe. The strings are also divided into two groups. This “doubleness” is thus a somewhat intended axis of the entire work. However, the type of narration, rivalry in the pairs of instruments and between the groups generates resources of energetic whirls, tightly planned combinations of discharges and pressures, comprising quite an intensive character of the work. Eventually - not without reason - the title is made of ... a pair of words, both of which aspire to define the strategy of the work: double and battery. Resonating together: Double Battery.
