Marcin Stańczyk, first Resident-Composer of Musica Polonica Nova Festival

Marcin Stańczyk, first Resident-Composer of Musica Polonica Nova Festival
2018-04-11

Upcoming 31st edition of the "Musica Polonica Nova" festival in Wrocław is going to take place on 20-28 april. It is, next to "Warsaw Autumn", among the oldest polish festivals dedicated to new music. One of the ideas of MPN's new artistic director Paweł Hendrich is to show the work of one particular composer during each edition of the festival. The first artist to be invited as a Resident-Composer is Marcin Stańczyk. Congratulations!

The latest works by Stańczyk are going to be presented as a part of the residency. The composer encourages the listeners to experience his pieces wearing blindfolds, which will be an important prop in "Blind Walk" premiered during Venice Biennale, as well as new piece "Sursounds" commissioned by National Forum of Music for two NFM ensembles: Lutosławski Quartet and LutosAir Quintet.

The National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra led by conductor Marzena Diakun will perform "Woven Music" - a piece which refers to the sounds of weaving machines recorded by Stańczyk in Museum of Textiles in Łódź.

Stańczyk will also engage the Wrocław audience to take part in one of his pieces. Red boxes similar to mailboxes will be displayed in various places in the city. Next to them, the audience will find "scores" inviting them to perform a piece entitled "Possible Music". Anyone will be able to imagine Stańczyk's piece and share their impressions by writing them on the back of the "scores" and throwing them into the boxes. These impressions will then be used by Stańczyk to create a new work.

The composer will give a lecture on his own works, and after that he will lead a masterclass for composition students in Wrocław Academy of Music.
