In The Tatra Mountains
Characteristic Overture Op. 27
The orchestral overture In the Tatra Mountains was written in 1870 during Żeleński’s time in Paris, where he was studying composition. As his two symphonies have not come down to us, this work is considered to be representative of the composer’s symphonic output. A sonata-form composition with fugato in the development, it was first performed in public in 1871, in Cracow. This overture is still readily performed by orchestral ensembles today.
