Krakowiaks Op. 23
for Piano
In his op. 23 set, Statkowski takes account of the metric-rhythmic properties of the krakowiak – duple metre, syncopations and dotted rhythms. He also introduces structures referring to characteristic dance figures, such as hołubce (two strikes of one heel on the other in the air) and przytupy (three stamps in the rhythm of two quavers and a crotchet). After the fashion of Polish traditional music, the composer employs the technique of differentiating phrases, eliminating simple repetitions in favour of variation. In op. 23, elements determining the generic identity of the krakowiak are subjected to artistic stylisation. Besides fragments adhering to a quick tempo, typical of the dance, there also appear sections that are clearly slower, as well as numerous places where the musical narrative is speeded up or slowed down, weakening the dance character of these miniature pieces.
