“The Best of…” compilations are a product of long-established music markets. They caught on when the catalogues of popular composers’ and performers’ albums became too large to follow even for the most fervent fans looking for their favourite numbers. Though such an approach to the legacy of one of the greatest composers in Polish music history may seem blasphemous, we suggest that this 3CD release should be treated rather as a kind of guiding map, which makes possible a bold plunge into the world of Moniuszko’s music and its numerous interpretations. Our carefully selected programme includes songs for voice and piano (sung here by Maria Kunińska-Opacka and Andrzej Hiolski), arias from the operas The Raftsman, The Haunted Manor, and Halka, as well as operatic overtures. The album seems successfully to sum up the Moniuszko Year as well as proving that twelve months is much too little to get thoroughly acquainted with, and ensure proper recognition for his music.
