String Quartet No. 1
Version B
Inspiration to write the ''First String Quartet Version B,'' came from memorable performances of George Crumbs ''Black Angels'' by the Wilanowski Quartet in Warsaw and Baranów Sandomierski and a talk by Marek Dyżewski about the ''Stabat Mater''. Apart from their usual stringed instruments, the members of the quartet also use percussion instruments. An integral part of the piece is the tape part, with fragments of the ''Quartet'', a fragment of the fourth movement of the ''Stabat Mater'' by Karol Szymanowski, fragments of the recited sequence of ''Stabat Mater'' and soprano vocals performed by Olga Szwajgier recorded on it. The dynamics of each part of the tape depends on the artists concept, and from there each performance can have a different set of sound qualities.
