Witold Lutosławski fascinated Andrzej Krzanowski with his remarkable personality and musical wisdom. It was from Lutosławski that he learned to notate every note in a responsible and precise way, and also to ensure that the form was legible and the message clear. That admiration is expressed in the dedication ‘To Mr Witold Lutosławski’ placed on the title page of two of his compositions: Relief V, written in January 1986, and the String Quartet No. 3, dating from two years later. Relief V, for solo cello, displays a striking array of emotional shades. The sounds are subjected to electrifying animato energy or assume the form of spiritual phrases similar to those from the Second Symphony or Audycja VI. The lack of motoric propulsion and the extensive ‘guitar’ arpeggios, the playing both con passione and con dolcezza, with the use of extremely vivid and nuanced dynamics, lend this work the character of a personal utterance. Relief V was first performed in London, in March 1987, by Roman Jabłoński.
