Canticum graduum reflects tendencies typical of Górecki's compositional style of the 1969s, since the work is shaped by successive tonal groups, made up of the vertically arranged tonal blocks. It was not the timbre, however, that the composer was concerned with, but he wanted to bring to prominence the ''intriguing'' harmonic plan. It is interesting that in those complicated tonal structures one can find as the composer noticed himself - musical allusions to two Polish church hymns: one sung during the Preface, i.e. the introductory song preceding the proper Eucharistic prayer and the other the melody of Pater noster.
