Henryk Wieniawskis famous ''Faust'' Fantasy was based on the best-known motifs from Charles Gounod's opera. The composer wrote it in 1865, that is six years after the Paris premiere of the opera. He treated it as a dramatic scene, and so the whole is made up thus: introduction, recitative, lyrical aria, dramatic episode and ballet finale. The virtuosic technical aspect of the piece makes sure that the composition has retained its freshness and vitality to the present day.
