The music of Johannes Brahms is especially close to me. It therefore gave me great pleasure when Heribert Beissel approached me with suggestion that I compose a work for symphony orchestra to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Brahms's birth. ''Hommage a Johannes Brahms'' is a short work for full symphony orchestra. The opening episode is related to the introduction to Brahms's first Symphony, not only in its motifs and rhythms but also in its instrumentation. The second link to the great German composer is the recurrent motif built on the notes B(=B flat) - Re - A - H (=b) - Mi - Es (=E flat). This score, which dates from 1982, is a continuation of some of my earlier symphonic works, particularly the sixth Symphony.
