The Polonaise from Andrzej Wajdas film adaptation of Adam Mickiewicz's epic poem Pan Tadeusz has become the most popular polonaise since Michał Kleofas Ogiński's Pożegnanie Ojczyzny (Farewell to the Homeland) published in 1794.

"They asked me how many times I had read Pan Tadeusz while writing the music. God forbid! Not even once. The only Pan Tadeusz that exists is for me now is that of Wajda and I was not writing music for Mickiewiczs poem, I was scoring Wajdas film. Pan Tadeusz does sit inside every Pole though, so so its inside me as well, though I dont keep it next to the bed. However, I have read it many times and all those scenes are embedded in me. Its a part of my Polishness. So when it came to composing, the music seemed obvious." [Wojciech Kilar]
