Karol Szymanowskis Symphony No. 1 in F minor Op.15 is one of the composers first orchestral Works. The unfinished first movement (Allegro patetico) has been edited on the basis of a copy containing Grzegorz Fitelbergs performance suggestions. The third movement (Allegretto con moto. Grazioso) has been preserved on the form of the composers manuscript. The present version of the Symphony differs from the critical edition of the original text of the Complete Works published in 2009. As suggested by Grzegorz Fitelberg, dynamics has been completed and missing motives in some parts have been inscribed; articulation and phrasing have been standardized. Obvious errors arising from the failure of the placement of clefs or key signatures at the beginnings of particular systems, with the resulting pitch changes especially misleading in the case of transposing instruments, have been corrected. Also instances of orthographic awkwardness in the musical and rhythmic notation have been emended. Taking into account the forces of contemporary Polish symphonic orchestras, the reduction of the numbers of horns and harps in both movements has been proposed. The revision of instrumentation has made it possible not only to avoid doubling in particular parts, e.g. in horns, through shifting in a small number of cases the melodic phrase of horns to trombones or bassoons, but it has also enhanced the orchestral timbre and the fluency of the musical argument.
