In this basically one-movement work, three selections of unequal length may be distinguished: the first - functions as an introduction, the second - forms a cycle of nine variations in which the harpsichord is allotted an almost solo role, and the third is a free improvisation for the piano against a background of wind-wood instruments, strings, and the vibraphone.
