The Italian adjective vagante means wandering, loafing, straying and renders the character and sense of this spatial composition, in which the soloists and the orchestra are arranged around the listeners, the speakers over their heads forming a gigantic ellipse, while the most essential subject is the wandering of the sound: between the speakers, from one soloist to another, from one group of instruments to the other. These sounds wander over trajectories sometimes resembling symmetrical forms of mandalas, whose drawings are a result of the criss-crossing of variously-shaped lines joining the twelve points arranged evenly along the circle and resembling the hours on the face of the clock. Most of the remaining musical parameters, such as the pitches, registers, duration, rhythms and articulation are assigned to this wandering; besides, they are determined at many points in the score by algorhithms based on random choices. These probabilistic decisions depend, however, on the fully composed score of the movement of the sounds in space. [Krzysztof Knittel]
