Concerto lugubre
for Viola and Orchestra
Viola concerto seems to be the one of particularly classical features. This ''classicism'' of Baird is expressed here not only by referring to the classical-romantic patterns of musical narration, the course of tension, but also in the whole expressive structure of the piece. Due to an extraordinary transparency of the piece, to the clean planning of tensions, due to the distinct ''themes'' - the shape of this concerto is clear for the listener after its first hearing.
