Polish Fantasia
for Organ
A composition student of Max Bruch and a virtuosic organist, Feliks Nowowiejski (1877–1946) composed Polish Fantasia, op. 9, no.1, during his early creative period before the First World War. Subtitled Pasterka na Wawelu (Christmas Midnight Mass at the Wawel Cathedral in Cracow]), the Polish Fantasia quotes melodies of two Polish Christmas carols, Anioł pasterzom mówił (The Angel spoke to the shepherds) and Gdy się Chrystus rodzi (When Christ is born). In Fantazja Polska, the composer intricately, using sophisticated counterpoint art, confronts the themes of Polish Christmas carols ( Angel shepherds and When Christ is born ). At some point, the work acquires a chorale solemnity enriched with imitations of church bells and refers to the music of the Podhale highlanders with a characteristic Lydian scale.
